Problems solved by technology

[0007] However, a common problem with currently available devices is that, in addition to shielding the user from harmful radiation, they also hinder the transmission of the antenna and thus reduce the efficiency of the antenna
Reduced antenna efficiency clearly has an impact on device availability by making wireless connections that rely on radio transmissions less reliable
Current shields also tend to be oversized, severely compromising the size and usability of mobile devices

Embodiment Construction

[0046] Figure 1a with 1b The shielding cover 14 (or shielding device; the terms can be used interchangeably) according to the first embodiment of the present invention is shown. The shield cover 14 includes a shield layer 10 supported on a substrate 12. The shielding layer 10 includes a circuit having a plurality of single cells 16 that are paired to form a dual-band unit cell and are encapsulated in two separate loop structures 18, as described in more detail below. Figure 1c It is a schematic diagram of the shielding cover 44 on the user device 40 with the antenna 42 emitting electromagnetic radiation. The shield is placed on the user device, and the shield layer faces the user device. The distance between the shielding cover and the antenna is the depth of the user device. For a typical mobile phone, the depth is about 5 mm.

Abstract

A shielding apparatus which is for passively attenuating electromagnetic radiation and which comprises a plurality of cells. Each cell comprises a plurality of resonators (26) which are spaced from one another. The cells are arranged in a plurality of unit cells with each unit cell comprising a common loop (32) which surrounds at least two adjacent cells of the plurality of cells. The plurality ofunit cells each have an asymmetric structure. The shielding apparatus thus has a negative refractive index for at least one selected frequency whereby electromagnetic radiation at the at least one selected frequency is passively attenuated.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a shielding case for reducing energy radiated from devices such as mobile phones or notebook computers. Background technique [0002] Many modern devices, such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets, can send and receive radio frequency electromagnetic radiation. These transmissions are the basis for providing functions, such as Internet connections, which have been regarded by users as standard configurations for these types of devices. [0003] However, an undesirable side effect of these transmissions is that alternating radio frequency (RF) currents in the antenna will induce radio frequency electric fields that will penetrate tissues near the user. The energy radiated by these electric fields can be absorbed by the user's tissue, causing the tissue to rise in temperature and possibly damage the tissue. [0004] In order to infer the degree of heating caused by these radio frequency fields, it is common practice to measure ...
