The method includes the following steps that the deviation dCn of the detected hot water productivity C0n from the reference hot water productivity C01 of the gas water heater is obtained and stored; the current hot water productivity Cb of the gas water heater is calculated accordingto the deviation dCn; and the current hot water productivity Cb and the reference hot water productivity C01 are compared, and the opening degree of a gas control unit of the gas water heater is controlled for adjustment according to the comparison result. According to the method, the deviation dCn is calculated and is used for calculating the current hot water productivity Cb of the gas water heater, so that the current hot water productivity Cb is more accurate, further, the current hot water productivity Cb and the reference hot water productivity C01 of the gas water heater are compared,the opening degree of the gas control unit of the gas water heater is controlled for adjustment according to the comparison result, thus the gas water heater can be ensured to reach the proper combustion conditions during combustion operation, and the good combustion conditions are ensured.
