Embodiment

[0284] An example of a product handling system is now described. Embodiments of the automated system allow rapid dispensing of large quantities (quantities of approximately 10,000) of unique incoming products into packages for customer delivery.

[0285] According to one embodiment, the system provides an automated grocery store that provides fast (eg, minutes) fulfillment and packaging. In particular, grocery items typically involve 1,000 or 10,000 unique items.

[0286] For example, a single product item in the fresh produce domain can contain a large amount of associated data. That is, an individual fruit or vegetable (for example, an apple) may be associated with one or more of the following:

[0287] · Product Item Identifier (ID)

[0288] ·size

[0289] ·color

[0290] ·Variety

[0291] ·Harvest date

[0292] source (e.g. farm)

[0293] ·Visual inspection results

[0294] · Non-visual inspection results (eg, softness, gas samples, many other results)

Abstract

Embodiments of the product handling system facilitate the transfer of individual product items from incoming bulk form into dedicated trays for inspection, sorting, selection and packaging. Inspection may involve interrogation of product items within the tray by electromagnetic (eg, optical, hyperspectral) or other (eg, physical, acoustic, gas sensing, etc.) techniques. Before packaging, the product items placed in said trays can be stored on a mobile conveyor that controls environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, light, ambient gases, product-product interactions, etc. Moving product items from the transfer station of the carousel to the external docking location can be done using robots and / or conveyor belts. Embodiments may allow for rapid, low-cost consumer selection of specific individual product items based on their accompanying metadata (eg, source, identifier), combined with the inspection results (eg, visual appearance). Embodiments may receive product items pre-packaged in pallet format to expedite inspection, sorting, selection, and packaging.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 589,409, filed November 21, 2017, and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 675,656, filed May 23, 2018, each of which is hereby adopted References are incorporated herein in their entirety for all purposes. Background technique [0003] Efficiently handling many different types of items of various shapes and / or sizes can present increasingly complex technical challenges. For example, produce offered individually by traditional grocery stores may range in size from raisins to watermelons. Additionally, the quality of such agricultural products may degrade over time, affecting their monetary value. Contents of the invention [0004] Product handling systems according to embodiments facilitate the transfer of individual product items from incoming bulk form into dedicated trays for subsequent inspection, sorting, selection and packagin...
