[0016] The following description relates to systems and methods for estimating axle loads. The axle can be included in as figure 1 In the vehicle shown in , the vehicle includes a propulsion source. Axle systems may include knuckles, kingpins, tie rods and axles. knuckle can be figure 2 type shown in . Kingpin can be as image 3 Connect the steering knuckle to the axle as shown in . Angle sensors sense the angle between two axle system components such as Figure 4 shown. Figure 5 and Image 6 Shows how one side of the trapezoid formed by the axle system responds to axle loads. like Figure 7 As shown in , axle load data from the axle system can be communicated to other vehicle systems and external systems. Figure 8 A method for estimating axle loads and communicating axle loads is shown in . Finally, the relationship between axle angle and axle load is given by Figure 9 shown in .

Abstract

Methods and systems for estimating an axle load of a vehicle are described. In one example, a method is disclosed wherein axle load is estimated in response to an angle between two components of an axle. The angle may change as weight is added to or removed from the axle such that axle load may be determined as a function of the angle.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a system and method for determining the axle load of a vehicle by measuring the toe angle of each wheel of the axle. Background technique [0002] The axle load of a vehicle is the total weight transferred to the road by the axle and its wheels. When weight is added to the vehicle, the axle loads of the vehicle may increase and when weight is removed from the vehicle, the axle loads may decrease. The gross weight of the vehicle can affect the distance the vehicle needs to travel until it comes to a stop and the stability of the vehicle. Therefore, it may be necessary to determine the vehicle's axle loads. One method of determining vehicle axle loads is to install one or more strain gauges on the axle or vehicle suspension components. However, when strain gauges are exposed to environmental conditions (eg, salt, water, temperature, and dust) and vehicle conditions (eg, vibration), they may have a tendency to separate...
