Problems solved by technology

The former is not feasible for field deployment, while field-deployable versions of the latter are prohibitively expensive and may be a limited, still paradoxically underutilized resource
Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography and near-infrared scanners are portable tools to identify LVO but are operator dependent

Abstract

Apparatus and methods for diagnosing conditions consistent with the presence of cranial blood vessel blockage and large vessel occlusions (LVO's) using the framework of a small head-harness that is transportable, field-expedient, and durable. A single pulse set using ultrasonic or near-infrared energy is broadcast into a patient's brain allowing the apparatus to perform an area scan of the brain and detect and decipher cranial blood vessel blockage and LVO signal patterns. The interpretation of the pattern lies within the internal programming which produces a binary signal as to whether an LVOis suspected or not.

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 62486177, filed April 17, 2017, and US Provisional Application No. 62517459, dated June 9, 2017, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. [0003] Statement Regarding Federally Sponsored Research or Development Not Applicable [0004] Incorporation by reference of material submitted on disc [0005] Not applicable Background technique [0006] In the United States, nearly 800,000 strokes occur each year, and almost 3 million Americans are currently disabled by stroke. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and, in the United States alone, stroke is the leading cause of disability costs exceeding $73 billion annually. [0007] The most disabling and fatal type of ischemic stroke (ie, lack of blood flow to the brain) is caused by large vessel occlusion (LVO). Untreated patients with LVO h...
