Embodiment Construction

[0037] exist figure 1 The welding unit 10 is shown in . The welding cell 10 includes a conveyor 12 that feeds workpieces W along a stationary bed 36 along a workpiece flow path to a work area including, for example, a robot 18 and a welding gun 20 . The robot 18 picks up the workpiece W from the unloading location 37 on the conveyor 12 and transports it to the fixture 16 where the welding gun 20 performs various welding operations. Controller 22 ( figure 1 ) can be connected to the conveyor 12, the robot 18 and the welding gun 20 to efficiently coordinate their operations.

[0038] The disclosed conveyor 12 uses discrete magnets ( Figure 5 Reference numeral 64 in ) to pull the workpiece W along the surface or workpiece support portion of the stationary bed 36 in order to maneuver the workpiece W from an initial loading position to a predictable unloading position.

[0039] refer to figure 2 , the conveyor 12 contains various modules that can be interconnected with each ...

Abstract

A conveyor for ferrous workpieces contains a frame. A stationary bed is attached to the frame. The stationary bed has a workpiece support portion constructed of a non-magnetic material. The workpiece support portion defines a workpiece flow path. A drive assembly is disposed below the workpiece support portion. The drive assembly includes a plurality of discrete magnets configured to move in the direction of the workpiece flow path. At least one guide rail extends upwardly relative to the workpiece support portion on a side opposite the drive assembly. The guide track is configured to orient the workpiece to a desired location relative to the workpiece flow path.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a conveyor for moving parts or workpieces, such as weldments for welding operations, in a production environment. Background technique [0002] Welding is a very common production operation used to weld steel components together or to attach weld studs or nuts. For safety reasons, these operations are usually contained in enclosed work areas. To further improve safety and speed up production, robots can be used to pick up workpieces from a conveyor to a work area where they are loaded into fixtures for welding. [0003] Robots require the workpiece to be positioned relatively precisely on the conveyor in order to pick up the workpiece quickly and repeatedly position the workpiece in the fixture. The conveyor may contain some sort of locating feature that cooperates with each workpiece in an attempt to more precisely locate the workpiece for the robot. One type of conveyor uses a continuous chain drive with exposed p...
