Abstract

A universal communications module (10) is provided for field devices (38) of a control system. A set of pins is connected to the field device (38). The field device (38) configuration can be changed by interconnecting different pins (46) in the pin set (14). Multiple pin selectors (52) are provided with different arrangements of connectors for interconnecting the pins (46). Thus, the field device (38) may be easily configured by connecting a particular pin selector (52) onto the pins (46) that matches the desired configuration.
