The embodiment of the invention discloses a method and a device for identifying a bar code. A specific embodiment of the method comprises steps of a first area where target pixel points are located being selected from a binary image of a to-be-recognized bar code, the pixel points included in the first area belonging to the same row, the width of the first area being not smaller than a preset width, and the width of the first area being used for indicating the number of the pixel points included in the first area; the preset width being used for indicating the total number of bars and spaces included in a sub-area of a non-data area of the bar code to be identified, and the preset width being not less than two; determining whether the first region includes a sub-region; in response to determining that the first region comprises a sub-region, selecting a second region where the first region is located, and determining whether the second region comprises a non-data region; and in response to determining that the second area comprises the non-data area, identifying the bar code to be identified according to the position of the non-data area included in the second area to obtain an identification result. According to the method, identification efficiency of the bar code is improved.
