However, the problem that can be encountered with this approach is that the parts to which the safety pins are attached need to be correspondingly strengthened, the parts to which these parts are attached also need to be correspondingly strengthened, and so on
this snowball effect can add considerable excess weight to the vehicle

Embodiment Construction

[0027] Structural fuses in the form of fuse pins constructed in accordance with the present invention are figure 1 It is shown schematically in and is generally designated by the reference numeral 1 . The safety pin 1 comprises a substantially cylindrical body 2 with a hollow inner region 3 . In this figure, for simplicity, the cylindrical body 2 is shown with a simple straight-sided inner wall. In practice, the inner surface of the cylindrical body 2 may be arranged with a predetermined profile such that the hollow area 3 is larger in some areas than in others. Therefore, the shearing position in the safety pin 1 can be designed as required. According to the invention, the safety pin 1 comprises a plurality of elongated reinforcing elements 4 in the form of long fibers embedded in a metal matrix 5 . In this embodiment, the reinforcing element 4 extends axially along the safety pin: the pin has a longitudinal axis 6 and the reinforcing element is arranged substantially para...

Abstract

The present invention provides a structural protector (1) configured to shear upon application of a predetermined load and comprising a plurality of elongate reinforcing elements (4) located in a metallic matrix (5). The provision of a so-called metal matrix composite material results in a protector which is lighter in weight than conventional metal pins and has improved fatigue properties and thus a longer service life. The load (or load range) of the fuse arrangement for shearing can be designed by carefully arranging the orientation of the reinforcing elements and by selecting the proportion of the reinforcing elements in the matrix. Consequently, it is possible to produce a fuse having a load range that is narrower than the load range that can be achieved heretofore.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to structural fuses, such as may be present on aircraft or aircraft support equipment. The invention also relates to a part of an aircraft or aircraft support device comprising such a structural fuse. The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing such a structural fuse. Background technique [0002] Structural fuses are components used to provide a point of failure under predetermined loads in order to prevent damage to other components. Structural fuses can take many forms; when in the form of pins, structural fuses are also known as fuse pins, shear pins, or break pins. Structural fuses are commonly used in agricultural and industrial machinery, power tools, buildings and vehicles such as aircraft. [0003] For example, structural fuses in the form of fuse pins typically form part of the connection between an aircraft landing gear beam and an aircraft wing. If the aircraft undergoes a particularly hard land...
