Embodiment Construction

[0053] Turning now to the drawings, and in particular FIGS. 1-4, television schedule information delivery and application systems 50A-50D are shown. Systems 50A-50D transmit network control messages such as TV schedule data and associated packets via the video blanking interval (VBI) line in the TV signal of various television programming providers 51 such as PBS, MTV or Showtime. This data is obtained by the Star Sight Corporation subscriber unit 52 and used to form an internal database. The internal database can be accessed by the subscriber unit 52 to display a TV schedule for channels received by the subscriber's TV.

[0054] Since access to network systems 50A-50D is via subscription services, a security computer 53 is used to encrypt some messages to prevent non-user access. Essentially any encryption system can be used with the present invention, but one of the encryption systems disclosed in U.S. Patent Nos. 4,531,020 and 4,531,021 is preferred.

Abstract

Television schedule information transmission and utilization systems (50A-50D) transmit TV schedule data and associated network control messages provided by computer (54) as packets via the Video Blanking Interval (VBI) lines in the TV signal from various television program providers (51). This data is acquired by regional data procssing systems and forwarded by the regional data processing systems to subscriber units (52) and used to construct an internal database. This internal database can be accessed by the subscriber unit (52) to display a TV schedule for the channels that are received by the user's TV.

Description

[0001] origin of invention [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of co-assigned application to Young et al. filed February 18, 1992, entitled "User and Television Schedule System" interface", and the Young et al. patent is a continuation of the now abandoned Federal Patent Application Journal No. 01 / 579,555, filed September 10, 1990. This patent is also a continuation-in-part of a co-assigned application titled "TV Schedule Information Dissemination and Application System and Process" by Roop et al. Filed May 4th, agent Doket STAR-005 / OOUS. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for disseminating, receiving and using television schedule information, and more particularly to systems and methods in which television schedule information is broadcast during, for example, the vertical blanking interval of a television broadcast , compiles a schedule of television programs for the user's broadcast area or cable system ...
