Problems solved by technology

However, this fitting system does not prevent foreign matter or other debris from entering the fuel tank
Another disadvantage is that the presence of such joints alone is considered to reduce the life and volume of the fuel tank

Embodiment Construction

[0025] now refer to figure 1 , a combustion powered tool suitable for use in the present invention is indicated generally at 10 . The tool 10 includes a housing 11 enclosing a fuel metering valve 13 and a fuel chamber 12 which removably houses a fuel tank 14 . The structure and operation of tool 10 are described in detail in the patents incorporated by reference above.

[0026] exist figure 2 and 3 In , a fuel tank connector, generally designated by 16 , is designed to couple with the fuel tank 14 and facilitate engagement of the fuel tank in the fuel tank cavity 12 . Adapter housing 18 has a generally cylindrical nozzle 20 and a seat 22 designed to engage fuel tank 14 and to which the nozzle is attached. The nozzle 20 has a free end 24 and defines a passage 26 with a breakable membrane 28 blocking the passage 26 . The breakable membrane 28 has a hole 29 for air to escape, and it is preferably positioned at or near the free end 24 of the nozzle 22 to visually indicate ta...

Abstract

A fuel cell adapter system for a combustion tool which includes a housing enclosing a fuel metering valve. The fuel cell is provided with an adapter having a generally cylindrical nozzle and an enlarged base configured for engagement upon the fuel cell. The nozzle has a lobed free end and defines a passageway. A frangible membrane is provided for blocking the passageway. The latch is disposed in the housing for releasably securing the adapter in fluid communication with the fuel metering valve. The latch includes a latch body having at least one locking tang movable between a closed position and an open position, and a release member for moving the locking tang to release said engagement with the adapter and permitting withdrawal of said fuel cell from said tool.

Description

field of invention [0001] This invention relates to improvements in fuel tank fitting systems for use in combustion tools. Background technique [0002] As exemplified in U.S. Patent Nos. 4,403,722, 4,483,474, 4,522,162, and 5,115,944 to Nikolich, all of which are incorporated herein by reference, it is known to use a fluid-dispensing distributor to distribute hydrocarbon fuel to Combustion air tools, such as a combustion air fastener driver tool. Such fastener driving tools and fuel tanks are commercially available under the trademark IMPULSE from ITW-Paslode of Vernon Hills, Illinois (a division of Illinois Tool Works, Inc.). In particular, a suitable fuel tank is disclosed in the aforementioned Nikolich US Patent No. 5,115,944. [0003] Standard systems for mounting fuel tanks on combustion tools are known, for example placing the fuel tank into a combustion tool with a metering device but no connection. This system has the advantage of being compa...
