Embodiment Construction

[0017] Figure 1 shows a preferred embodiment of an apparatus 10 constructed in accordance with the present invention. It includes a narrow strip 12 for wrapping around at least one item (not shown). The one or more items may be, for example, hard-sided or soft-sided luggage, luggage handles, books, shipping cartons, pieces of furniture, clothing, and the like. These items may have the same design or different designs.

[0018] The strap includes a flexible portion 14 which, in typical applications, may be made of a material having high tensile strength, such as polyamide. The narrow band has first and second separable end portions 16, 18 preferably made of metal (especially portion 16), a rigid plastic (particularly portion 18), or a combination thereof (particularly portion 16). )production. An adjustable ring 17 connects the flexible portion 14 of the strap 12 to the rigid end 16 and a retaining ring 19 connects the strap to the rigid end 18 . The device 10 also includes...

Abstract

First and second separable portions such as opposite ends of a strap that is wrapped around one or more articles to be secured are overlapped. A ratchet is operable with the portions joined in overlapping relation for increasing the amount of the overlap, thereby effectively shortening the strap and taking up slack. A mechanical advantage is provided that makes it easy to tighten the strap securely around one or more articles. A lock can be locked to prevent, or unlocked to enable, separation of the portions.

Description

technical field [0001] In general, the present invention involves joining in overlapping relationship first and second separable parts of the same article or of different articles. In its preferred embodiment, the present invention relates to a novel and highly effective narrow strap for wrapping around and securely securing various items such as luggage and preventing unauthorized access to these items . Background technique [0002] Straps, ropes, threads, etc. (collectively referred to herein as straps) for securing various items are known and very useful. For example, narrow straps are used by travelers to reinforce their luggage, to link two or more pieces of luggage (or their handles) together so that they cannot be separated, or to hang luggage, cameras, or other items by the shoulder or by hand installation. Students wrap the tape around books or other items so that they can be easily carried, or simply tied together. Vacationing families use straps attached to r...
