Problems solved by technology

For example, soft magnetic underlayer materials such as Ni 80 Fe 20 or Co 90 Fe 10 , can exhibit a multipolar magnetic domain state, which generates noise that enhances the playback signal, thus reducing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)

Embodiment Construction

[0020] The present invention provides an orthogonal magnetic recording head for deflecting a soft magnetic underlayer in a magnetic recording medium during operation thereof to remove noise from the soft magnetic underlayer. The invention is particularly applicable to magnetic disk storage systems. A recording head referred to herein is defined as a recording head capable of reading and / or writing operations.

[0021] attached figure 1 A disk drive 10 to which the orthogonal magnetic recording media can be applied is shown, including a chamber mechanism 12 (for visibility purposes, the upper half has been removed and the lower half is shown), the chamber mechanism 12 is sized and configured to accommodate the various components of the drive. Access drive 10 includes a drive shaft 14 for rotationally driving at least one magnetic storage medium 16, which may be an orthogonal magnetic recording medium. Inside the chamber mechanism is a disk. Included within the chamber mecha...

Abstract

A perpendicular magnetic recording head 22 includes a read head having means for generating a magnetic field which reduces noise from a soft magnetic underlayer 40 of a recording medium 16 during operation of the recording head 22. The means for generating a magnetic field includes a current perpendicular to the plane read sensor 46 of the read head 34. The electrical current generates a magnetic field which biases the magnetization of the soft magnetic underlayer 40. By controlling the amount of current or current density that is passed through the read sensor 46, the magnitude of the magnetic field for biasing the soft magnetic underlayer 40 may be controlled. A method of using a perpendicular magnetic recording head 22 to magnetically bias a soft magnetic underlayer 40 of a recording medium 16 is also disclosed.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims the benefit of priority from an earlier US application, Serial No. 60 / 281430, filed April 4, 2001. technical field [0003] The invention relates to an orthogonal magnetic recording head, in particular to an orthogonal magnetic recording head for deflecting a soft magnetic bottom layer in an orthogonal magnetic recording medium. Background technique [0004] Orthogonal magnetic recording systems have been proposed for hard disk drives of computers. Orthogonal recording heads include a trailing write pole, a return or counter pole magnetically connected to the write pole, and an electrically conductive excitation coil surrounding the write pole yoke. Orthogonal recording media consist of a magnetically hard recording layer with perpendicular magnetic domains and a soft magnetic underlayer that acts to enhance the magnetic field of the recording head and provides the transition from the trailing write pole to the lea...
