Embodiment Construction

[0011] figure 1 is a block diagram 100 of an exemplary embodiment of the present invention capable of transmitting and receiving in first and second frequency bands. Certain signals may appear when transmitting and receiving in one frequency band, but may not appear when operating in another frequency band. When realizing the present invention, make following assumptions to baseband processor:

[0012] 1. The baseband can modulate digital and FM analog signals passing through the transmitter I and Q inputs of the modulator. The digital signal can be in the form of ∏ / 4DQPSK, GSM, 8-PSK or any digital modulation scheme available for TDMA systems. This ability to modulate both digital and FM analog signals makes it possible to share the same IF oscillator between receiver and transmitter, since the IF oscillator is not directly modulated in FM mode.

[0013] 2. Both the digital signal and the FM analog signal are demodulated in the receiver's quadrature demodulator and output ...

Abstract

A system and method for using a dual band transceiver to transmit and receive in a first and second hand, while reducing the frequency sources (Fig. 2). By reducing the number of frequency sources needed to operate a dual band transceiver and using common transmitter and receiver intermediate frequencies, the invention also reduces the number of filters and other components needed for its operation. The oscillating signals from these two frequency sources (205, 210) are scaled, combined, mixed, and filtered, such that only two primary frequency sources are needed to operate the front-end and back-end of both the transmitter and receiver of this dual band transceiver.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the architecture of communication devices, and more particularly to a system for minimizing frequency sources and filters in communication transceivers. Background technique [0002] With the continuous development of the cellular and wireless communication industry, the promulgation of various standards and protocols continue to plague the industry. This obsession, along with the fragmentation of the spectrum, has led to the need for dual-band, dual-mode wireless transceivers for the foreseeable future. [0003] Some products of wireless telephone equipment have successfully provided dual-mode transceivers (transceivers that support two or more protocols), and / or dual-band transceivers (transceivers that operate in multiple frequency ranges). However, these dual-band, dual-mode transceivers have significant disadvantages which are addressed by the present invention. Early dual-band transceivers consisted of two trans...
