Here, a network 10 communicatively connects one or more mobile stations 12 to a Packet Data Network (PDN) 14, such as the Internet, and a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) 16. Thus, network 10 provides different voice and data services to users of mobile station 12 . To enable packet data services, Radio Access Network (RAN) 22 is connected to Packet Core Network (PCN) 24 , which in turn is connected to PDN 14 through Managed IP Network 26 . For voice and other circuit-switched services, such as facsimile-based data services, RAN 22 is connected to Mobile Switching Center (MSC) 34 which in turn is connected to PSTN 6 via IS-41 network 36 . Abstract

A method and apparatus for link monitoring that determines the presence of a link signal by measuring the received energy of the signal. A signal is considered to be absent if the measured energy of the signal does not satisfy a defined energy threshold according to a prescribed evaluation criterion such as a sufficient measure. When applied to wireless communication networks, such monitoring can be used to suspend or terminate transmissions in response to detecting the absence of a link signal. In an exemplary embodiment for a 1xEV-DV (cdma2000 Revision C) wireless network, a mobile station selectively performs a forward link based on measuring the bit energy of the power control bits it receives on a dedicated power control subchannel monitor. If the mobile station is assigned a primary dedicated channel, it can perform forward link monitoring based on frame error rate (FER) estimates of data received on the primary dedicated channel rather than energy-based methods.
