Embodiment Construction

[0012] Figure 2A and 2B A vibration damping device (VMD) according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention is shown. Figure 2A is a cross-sectional view of VMD200, and Figure 2B is an exploded view of the VMD200. VMD 200 may be operatively attached or connected to reactor components within a boiling water reactor, such as components in steam dryer assembly 30 . As shown, VMD 200 may include acoustic screen 210 . Acoustic barrier 210 may comprise stainless steel and / or any other material suitable for a boiling water reactor environment. An acoustic screen 210 may be provided to reduce eddy currents that may excite acoustic room modes.

[0013] For example, acoustic barrier 210 may be configured to provide a relatively smooth flow of vapor through VMD 200 . This smooth flow of steam may help to avoid and / or potentially prevent acoustic chamber modes, which may also be referred to as acoustic cavity modes, from being excited in the steam plenum of the steam d...

Abstract

A device is provided for mitigating vibration in a component of a nuclear reactor by removing vibration energy. To reduce vibration in the component, a device operatively connected to the component and including a magnet (340) may be actuated within a conductive cylinder (330). This actuation may generate one or more eddy currents providing a damping function for removing vibration energy from the component, so as to alter vibration characteristics of the component.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a vibration damping arrangement for a nuclear reactor component and to a method for damping vibrations in a nuclear reactor component. Background technique [0002] Boiling water reactors (BWRs) have emerged as a reliable type of nuclear reactor for generating electrical energy. However, some boiling water reactors have experienced cracks in their various components. A contributing factor to component cracking in boiling water reactors may be due to high cycle fatigue. Typically, a boiling water reactor operates for about one to two years after filling a single fuel core. After a set period (commonly known as the power cycle or fuel cycle) approximately 1 / 4-1 / 2 of the least reactive fuel (the longest spent or most burned) can be removed from the reactor . The number of cycles that can constitute a relatively high cycle can vary from one boiling water reactor to another, as can other factors that can affect...
