Problems solved by technology

These conditions limit the expulsion of inspired air and may cause a feeling of suffocation and increased intrathoracic pressure on exhalation
This can cause the speech valve to be displaced, or it can lead to chronically increased intrathoracic pressure, which in turn jeopardizes the return of venous blood to the heart and predisposes a person to pulmonary hypertension

Embodiment Construction

[0025] The tracheostomy valve member of the present invention is suitable for use with a tracheostomy tube that is inserted into a patient's trachea. The valve member includes a first end for connecting to a free end of a tracheostomy tube; a second end including a valve member inlet; a first valve that allows airflow from the valve member inlet through the valve member to reach when the patient inhales the tube in the patient's trachea and which prevents airflow from the tube through the valve member when the patient exhales; and a second valve that allows airflow from the tube through the valve member and from the tube when the intrathoracic pressure is greater than about 12 cm of water during expiration The valve member is vented, which prevents such airflow when the intrathoracic pressure is less than 3 cm water column during exhalation.

Abstract

A tracheotomy valve unit for use with a tracheotomy tube inserted into a patient's trachea comprises a first end for connection to the tracheotomy tube, a second end comprising a valve unit inlet, a first valve that permits airflow to the tube when the patient inhales and blocks airflow from the tube when the patient exhales thereby permitting speech, and a second valve that permits airflow from the tube back out the valve unit when the intrathoracic pressure during expiration is greater than about 12 cm of water. The second valve functions as a pressure release valve that increases tolerance and wearing comfort. In one embodiment, the second valve comprises a slit valve or an umbrella valve.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a tracheostomy valve component suitable for use with a tracheostomy tube inserted into a patient's trachea. More particularly, the present invention relates to a valve member in tracheostomy comprising a first valve which allows airflow through the valve member when the patient inhales and prevents airflow through the valve member when the patient exhales so that he can speak, and a second valve. Pressure relief valve which reduces intrathoracic pressure during exhalation to improve comfort. Background technique [0002] Speech is usually produced by airflow over the vocal cords during exhalation, and individuals with tracheostomy tubes often have difficulty speaking. If a tracheostomy tube is in place, air is expelled primarily through the tracheostomy tube and not through the vocal cords during exhalation. To overcome this problem, a one-way tracheostomy valve (speaking valve) can be placed over the opening of the t...
