Method for presenting advertising in an interactive service

A method for presenting advertising in an interactive service provided on a computer network, the service featuring applications which include pre-created, interactive text / graphic sessions is described. The method features steps for presenting advertising concurrently with service applications at the user terminal configured as a reception system. In accordance with the method, the advertising is structured in a manner comparable to the service applications enabling the applications to be presented at a first portion of a display associated with the reception system and the advertising presented at a second portion. Further, steps are provided for storing and managing advertising at the user reception system so that advertising can be pre-fetched from the network and staged in anticipation of being called for presentation. This minimizes the potential for communication line interference between application and advertising traffic and makes the advertising available at the reception system so as not to delay presentation of the service applications. Yet further the method features steps for individualizing the advertising supplied to enhance potential user interest by providing advertising based on a characterization of the user as defined by the users interaction with the service, user demographics and geographical location. Yet additionally, advertising is provided with transactional facilities so that users can interact with it.

Indication of charging information using the USSD mechanism

To achieve an improved overview on service charges for a subscriber to a digital cellular communication network it is proposed to provide a mobile station with a charging indicating unit (6) adapted to receive charging information as unstructured supplementary service data messages (USSD) via the unstructured supplementary service data dialog. Therefore, it is possible to provide charging information without any impact on the hardware of the mobile station (MS). Further, as more detailed information on the kind of service and on the amount of data transferred is available a detailed estimate on the actual cost may be displayed to the user of the mobile station.

Handover method in wireless LAN by assigning an identification code to a mobile station

A handover method is to provided by which a station can move between access points with interruption in communication minimized. An access point assigns mobile stations existing in its own wireless network to identification codes, different from station to station, to thereby carry out association, and thereafter transmits beacon frames each containing a different identification code to the mobile stations. The identification codes are allocated beforehand specifically to each of the access points included in the wireless LAN. When the station is handed over to an adjacent access point, the adjacent access point transmits beacon frames containing the corresponding identification code to that station. Thus, the station is able to continue communication without recognizing the transfer from one wireless network to another.

Low Latency Multicast for Infiniband Host Channel Adapters

A low latency multicasting receive and send apparatus and method comprising low latency receive and send queues. In an InfiniBand® network each destination group of nodes (recipients) is identified by a unique Global ID (GID)+Local ID (LID). Each node whose ports are part of a multicast group identify themselves via a LID which identifies participating ports. When a switch receives such a multicast packet with a multicast LID in the packet's DLID field it replicates the packet to each of the designated ports. Each destination adapter at a receiving node receives the multicast packet and distributes copies of the packet to QPs in the host system that are registered for the multicast address.

Independent net task identification for efficient partition and distribution

InactiveUS7010789B1Improve distributed processing performanceEasy to processMultiprogramming arrangementsMemory systemsProgram unitTask management
A task management system, method and computer program product for determining optimal placement of task components on multiple machines for task execution, particularly for placing program components on multiple computers for distributed processing. First, a communication graph is generated representative of the computer program with each program unit (e.g., an object) represented as a node in the graph. Nodes are connected to other nodes by edges representative of communication between connected nodes. A weight is applied to each edge, the weight being a measure of the level of communication between the connected edges. Terminal nodes representative of the multiple computers are attached to the communication graph. Then, the communication graph is divided into independent nets and a min cut is found for each independent net. The min cut for the communication graph is the combination of the min cuts for all of the independent nets. Finally, program components which may be a single program unit or an aggregate of units are placed on computers according to the communication min cut.

Semi-distributed power spectrum control for digital subscriber line communications

ActiveUS20050220178A1Communications to minimizedFunction minimizedError preventionFrequency-division multiplex detailsTransceiverFrequency spectrum
A semi-distributed method of managing the spectral power over multiple digital subscriber line communication loops (LP1, LP2) is disclosed. A central office (CO) DSL transceiver (10) and a remote terminal (RT) DSL transceiver (15) communicate with customer premises equipment (CPE) (121, 122) over separate twisted-pair wire loops (LP1, LP2) that are in sufficient physical proximity with one another as to suffer from crosstalk. A network management center (NMC) (20) initializes a price parameter, which is used by the CO (10) and RT (15) in independent maximization problems. The CO (10) derives a maximum tolerable power spectral density for the RT (15) that permits the CO (10) to reach a target data rate, and the RT (15) derives an actual power spectral density that maximizes its data rate, each using the price parameter. The NMC (20) compares the actual RT power spectral density to the tolerable RT power spectral density, and adjusts the price parameter accordingly, with the process repeating until convergence. As a result, the RT data rate is maximized to a level that still permits the CO (10) to reach its target data rate, thus maximizing the overall network data rate.

Carrier frequency compensation system and method

Systems and methods automatically compensate for long-term drift of frequency standards or references used by transmitting and receiver terminals to avoid manual adjustment of the terminals to bring them back within operating tolerances and minimize communications outages caused by inability of the system to otherwise accommodate for such drift. The present invention may provide automatic band selection to maintain a modulated carrier within an operating range of an automatic frequency control or tracking capability of a communication device. This may be accomplished by selecting an appropriate reference signal used to control a center frequency of an automatic frequency control circuit (such as a PLL) or used to convert the carrier frequency of the modulated carrier to fall within the operating range of the automatic frequency control circuit and / or by causing the transmitting station to at least partially correct the frequency discrepancy.

Net zeroing for efficient partition and distribution

The present invention is a task management system, method and computer program product for determining optimal placement of task components on multiple machines for task execution, particularly for placing program components on multiple computers for distributed processing. For each net, non-terminal nodes adjacent to all of terminal nodes on the net and connected to the net by non-zero weighted edges are identified For each identified non-terminal node, the smallest weight for any terminal edge is identified and the weight of each terminal edge is reduced by the value of that smallest weight, the weight of terminal edges having the smallest weight being reduced to zero. After reducing weights on any terminal edges, The min cut solution is obtained from the reduced graph and program components, which may be a single program unit or an aggregate of units, are placed on computers according to the communication graph min cut solution.
