Abstract

Provided are a method and system for managing IP addresses assigned to mobile stations that can be performed in a PDSN or IWF. When it is determined that the mobile station in the dormant state has not used a real IP address for a certain period of time, the real IP address allocated to the mobile station is recycled and a virtual IP address is allocated. When the system receives a packet service request from the mobile station assigned the virtual IP address, the system reclaims the virtual IP address assigned to the mobile station and assigns a real IP address to the mobile station. The method includes: determining whether the mobile station in the dormant state uses a real IP address for a certain period of time; and reclaiming the real IP address assigned to the mobile station and assigning a virtual IP address through the PDSN or IWF.
