Embodiment 1-7

[0054] Seven compositions containing polyphenylene ether and poly(alkenyl aromatic) were prepared and tested for vibration welding strength. Table 1 shows the compositions of samples 1-7 and the results of the vibration welding test. Sample 1 represents the reference formulation without any weld strength promoter additive. Reference composition sample 1 contained poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE), HIPS (impact polystyrene) and KG 1651 saturated triblock anti- Impact Modifier (S-EB-S). This material has poor vibration welding strength. Samples 2-7 containing amine-based weld strength promoters in their compositions exhibited significant peak stresses, showing poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE), HIPS (impact resistance polystyrene) and KG 1651 saturated triblock impact modifier (S-EB-S) from Kraton Polymers composition has good vibration weld strength.

Abstract

The present invention provides a welded article having improved weld line strength, said article comprising a resin composition wherein said resin composition comprises at least one polyphenylene ether, at least one poly(alkenylaromatic) compound and at least one polyalkyleneimine. In a preferred embodiment, the welded article has been manufactured using at least one of ultrasonic welding and vibration welding, e.g., linear friction welding and spin friction welding. In another preferred embodiment, the welded article has a peak weld line stress of at least 800 psi, preferably of at least 1000 psi.

Description

Background technique [0001] Polyphenylene ether resins generally exhibit outstanding mechanical properties, heat resistance, electrical characteristics, and flame resistance, and are generally used in a wide range of applications such as auto parts. In particular, various auto parts such as interior components such as instrument panels and armrests, and underhood components such as resonators, and air intake components. Many of these components require a high degree of heat resistance, making polyphenylene ether resin compositions ideally suited for these applications; however, many of these same components are made in multiple parts and require component assembly adhesives, ultrasonic welding ) and / or friction welding (friction welding) technology. Adhesives often have disadvantages such as curing time, storage, handling and chemical odor issues. Welding techniques are often preferred, but failure due to repeated, prolonged periods of vibration and shock while welding is a ...
