Embodiment Construction

[0012] The present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. Figure 1 shows a computer system, generally indicated at 10, in which the present invention may be incorporated. Computer system 10 includes a management server 12 including a standard CPU 13 , operating system 14 and RAM 15 . The management server 12 executes a deployment analysis program 20 according to the invention, which identifies from a list of available servers 30, 32, 34...38 one or more eligible servers on which to deploy the new application, and then starts Deployment of a new application on one of the qualifying servers. The management server 12 is connected to the servers 30, 32, 34...38 through one or more networks 39, such as the Internet. Each server 30, 32, 34...38 comprises a respective CPU 50, 52, 54...58, a respective operating system 60, 62, 64...68, a respective RAM 70, 72, 74.. .78, respective storage devices 40, 42, 44...48, respective directory ...

Abstract

The present invention provides a system, method and computer program product for determining one of a plurality of servers on which to install and execute an application. First program instructions obtain information from each of the plurality of servers as to amounts of availability of their respective CPUs, RAMs and storage. Second program instructions determine one or more of the servers which have sufficient CPU, RAM and storage to execute the application. Third program instructions determine a weight for each of the amounts for the one or more servers. Fourth program instructions sum together, for each of the one or more servers, the weights for their respective amounts of availability of the CPUs, RAMs and storage. Fifth program instructions determine which of the one or more servers has a highest sum, whereby the server with the highest sum is recommended to execute the application.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to computer systems, and more particularly to techniques for automatically identifying a server among multiple servers that is most suitable for deploying a new application. Background technique [0002] Currently, when a decision is made to deploy a new application on a server or server cluster, the administrator checks the availability of resources on the candidate server (i.e., the total availability of memory, storage, and processors), and whether the new application is compatible with Programs already present on the candidate server (ie, operating systems, database applications, Java applications, Web applications, etc.) are compatible. The administrator then installs the new application on one of the compatible servers with sufficient resource availability. [0003] Administrators know that there are other secondary factors to consider. These factors can be considered together with the primary factors des...
