Problems solved by technology

[0008] It can thus be appreciated that current methods for dealing with the variability in the arrival times of data packets containing voice or video signals are unsatisfactory and, furthermore, when used in VoIP and other types of packet-based network systems to provide When dealing with natural-sounding speech, current methods cannot fully address the inherent problems

Embodiment Construction

[0028] Before discussing the present invention in detail, several terms and phrases are defined here for the present invention.

[0029] The scaling ratio is the ratio of the scaled time (time scaled) to the original signal length.

[0030] Time scaling is an operation in which input samples are deleted or duplicated according to a desired scaling ratio such that the ratio between the number of input and output samples corresponds to the desired scaling ratio. When performing speech sampling, the strong periodicity of speech is taken into account so that the spectral information does not change fundamentally. Time scaling can be achieved by duplicating or deleting one or more cycles. Furthermore, time scaling can also be viewed as adding or removing silent information in silent intervals in speech.

[0031] A speech packet is a data structure that contains encoded parameters corresponding to one or more speech frames.

[0032] The decoding block is a functional unit that ex...

Abstract

Disclosed is a method and a device for coupling to a packet switched network for receiving data packets containing time ordered information such as voice. In accordance with a method for operating a Voice over IP capable device that is coupled to a packet network, and a device that operates in accordance with the method, there is disclosed receiving and buffering data packets that comprise voice information; decoding the voice information to obtain voice samples; and buffering the decoded voice samples prior to generating a voice play-out signal, where the decoded voice samples are time scaled as a function of packet network conditions to adjust the Buffering Delay and to enable changing the voice play-out rate to provide a substantially continuous output voice signal regardless of the variation in the rate at which the data packets are received.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to telecommunication equipment and terminals, and more particularly to terminals connected to packet-switched networks and capable of receiving packets containing voice, for example VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls. Although described here primarily in the context of receiving and playing out packets containing speech, the invention is equally applicable to packets containing video information and, in general, to packets delivering time-ordered content , wherein the content is expected to be presented to the listener or viewer in a substantially continuous and uniform time sequence (that is, in a substantially uninterrupted and discontinuous manner). Voice content and video content are two basic types of time-ordered content, but the content is not limited thereto. Background technique [0002] In a packet-switched system such as the General Packet Radio System (GPRS), uncertainty caused by variations i...
