In some circumstances, such as fishing from boats, it is common for the lifejackets to be on hand but not worn at all times. In other activities, such as fishing from the shore, it may be that no flotation device is provided at all. In circumstances such as fishing from rocks however, there have been many instances where fishermen have been washed from the rocks and drowned. These cases may have been avoided with the use of an appropriate flotation device.
