Problems solved by technology

[0004] However, the barrier layer does not maintain sufficiently good barrier properties when it is subjected to mechanical deformation, mainly because of defects in the coating, such as pinholes and cracks, which lead to the formation of diffusion paths through the layer

Embodiment Construction

[0016] The present invention relates to a barrier layer manufactured by a single process that is thermoformable and reshapeable and has barrier properties good enough to be suitable as a barrier layer for electronic display applications. The solution of the invention is based on the coextrusion of a melt of inorganic material and a melt of organic material. The method is simple, not time-consuming, inexpensive, and can include a variety of starting materials, such as those that may be difficult to use in deposition techniques. Coextrusion can be performed using static mixers in combination with layer doubling. In this manner, multiple layers are formed in an extruded melt stream, which is then extruded through a die to form a sheet of adjustable thickness. The resulting barrier layer comprises alternating successive layers of organic and inorganic materials. The number of layers depends on the application, in principle a single layer of glass provides a sufficient barrier ef...

Abstract

This invention relates to a method of manufacture of a barrier, especially for electronic display devices, comprising the step of co-extruding a melt of at least one inorganic material with a melt of at least one organic material, wherein the at least one inorganic material and the at least one organic material are co-extruded as a continuous sheet.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method for the manufacture of barrier layers, in particular barrier layers for electronic display devices comprising alternating layers of at least one inorganic material and at least one organic material. Background technique [0002] For electronic display devices, barrier layers are very important, especially substantially transparent barrier layers. The barrier layer protects the device from gases like oxygen and moisture and should have low permeability, until now the industry has mainly used inorganic glass. For many applications like in OLEDs, polymer LEDs and CRTs, barrier requirements can only be met by continuous inorganic layers, and for transparent parts only inorganic glasses are used. However, more flexible displays are desired for a variety of applications for which glass is not suitable due to its brittleness. Organic coatings on inorganic glass sheets are a solution to these problems, but these barr...
