Embodiment Construction

[0047] As mentioned above, the industry is well known in the industry for the application of drilling machines for drilling holes in containers (such as pipelines), especially pressure vessels, and this application has been found in US Patent Nos. 4,579,484, 5,439,331 and 6,012,878 illustration. A typical design of a tapping machine suitable for tapping containers, especially pipes, is shown in Figures 1-3. The present invention is essentially an improved bearing, which can be applied to existing drilling machines, and is convenient for drilling holes in pipelines transporting high-temperature fluids (that is, high-temperature gases or liquids).

[0048]Figures 1, 2, and 3 show the basic structure of a tapping machine, which are taken from US Patent No. 5,439,331 entitled "High Pressure Tapping Apparatus". The teachings of this patent are incorporated herein by reference, and Figures 1, 2 and 3 are included herein to illustrate a typical environment in which the unique bearin...

Abstract

A bearing (130) for rotatably supporting a cylindrical shaft within a frame cylindrical support surface in which the shaft is subject to thermal expansion, the bearing (130) being formed of a tubular member having opposed ends (132, 134) and having an axial passageway therethrough, the outer surface (136) of the bearing member (130) having an external circumferential rib (144, 146) adjacent each of the ends (132, 134), each rib having an external diameter that permits the bearing member (130) to be slideably positionable in the frame internal cylindrical support surface, the axial passageway being defined by a central bearing surface (150) of internal diameter to rotatably receiving the shaft, the bearing surface (150) having an axial length less than the spacing between said ribs, the bearing (130) being deformable within elastic limits permitting the internal diameter of the bearing surface (150) to expand to accept thermal expansion of the shaft.

Description

[0001] Pending Application References [0002] This application is based on U.S. Provisional Application No. 60 / 449,199, entitled A HIGH TEMPERATURE TAPPING MACHINE, filed February 21, 2003, which was converted on February 5, 2004 US Patent Application No. 10 / 772,685, entitled "A BEARING FOR A ROTATABLESHAFT SUBJECT TO THERMAL EXPANSION." [0003] Microfilm Appendix Reference [0004] This application is not mentioned in any microfilm appendices. technical field [0005] The invention relates to a bearing for a rotating shaft subject to thermal expansion. The bearings described herein are particularly suitable for use in installations that tap pressure vessels such as pipes containing high temperature liquids or gases. Background technique [0006] Hole tapping machines are well known for making openings in pipes. Previously published U.S. Patent No. 3,614,252 titled "TAPPING APPARATUS", U.S. Patent No. 4,579,484 titled "Under Water Tapping Machine (UNDER WATER TAPPING M...
