Embodiment Construction

[0033] see figure 1 , an engine 10 is shown connected to a transmission of simple construction according to the present invention, which only includes: (a) a minimal track set 12; and (b) a control motor 14 (such as an electric motor, or preferably a variable hydraulic motor) , which is combined with a variable hydraulic pump (or generator) 16.

[0034] The track set 12 includes only an input gear 20 and an output gear 22 , both mounted for rotation about a first axis 24 , and a tower gear 26 mounted for rotation about a second axis 28 parallel to the first axis 24 . The input gear 20 is fixed for common rotation on a drive shaft 30 of the engine 10 and the output gear 22 is fixed for common rotation on an output shaft 32 . The tower gear 26 is fixed on an orbital shaft 33 which is rotatably supported in a web portion 34 which is mounted to rotate about the first axis 24 so that the orbital shaft 33 and the tower gear 26 Orbits about the first axis 24 , ie about the input g...

Abstract

A transmission having only a single minimal orbital arrangement in which an input gear and an output gear respectively connected to independent input and output shafts are connected to each other by an orbiting tower gear which is connected only to the input gear mesh with the output gear. The tower gear is supported by a web portion which is itself rotated by a hydraulic control motor via a first clutch. While rotation of the web portion is blocked, rotation of the input gear causes the output gear to rotate at a predetermined reduction ratio relative to the input drive portion, the reduction ratio continuously decreasing in proportion to the rotational speed of the web portion in the first direction. When the vehicle reaches highway speeds, the control motor is disengaged and the second clutch is engaged to connect a predetermined overdrive that is located between the engine drive and the transmission rather than between the transmission and the transmission as in conventional techniques. between the final output shafts.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a transmission for changing the output torque of an engine, and more particularly to an automatic transmission in which the torque and rotational speed of the engine driving part can be continuously and steplessly changed from the vehicle starting state to the normal highway driving state. Background technique [0002] All currently commercially available vehicle transmissions are bulky, complex and fuel-intensive, especially when used in diesel engines, causing serious air pollution problems. Commercially available relatively inefficient vehicle transmissions, and their torque converters, have been major targets for improvement for over 60 years. A wide variety of multiplex form orbital gear mechanisms for automatic vehicular transmissions exist in the prior art in which the change in output speed is achieved sequentially through each of a plurality of stepped gear ratios. [0003] When a vehicle such as a t...
