Embodiment Construction

[0024] Skin and some other body tissues reflect infrared light in the near-infrared range of approximately 700 to 900 nanometers, while blood absorbs radiation in this range. Thus, in video images of body tissue taken under infrared illumination, blood vessels appear as dark lines against a brighter background of surrounding bone and flesh. However, due to the reflective nature of subcutaneous fat, blood vessels underlying these large accumulations of fat may be difficult or impossible to see when illuminated with direct light (ie, light that generally arrives from a single direction).

[0025] The present inventors have determined that areas of body tissue with substantial accumulation of subcutaneous fat when imaged in the near-infrared range under highly diffuse infrared light exhibit less contrast between blood vessels and surrounding flesh and blood than regions of body tissue with substantial accumulation of subcutaneous fat observed under direct infrared light. Signific...

Abstract

The present invention provides an imaging system that irradiates body tissue with infrared light to enhance the visibility of subcutaneous blood vessels, and generates a video image of the body tissue and the subcutaneous blood vessels based on reflected infrared light. The system includes an infrared light source for generating infrared light and a structure for diffusing the infrared light. The diffusing structure includes one or more layers of diffusing material for diffusing the light. The system further includes a video imaging device for receiving infrared light reflected by the body tissue and for generating a video image of the body tissue based on the reflected infrared light.

Description

[0001] Related Patent Applications [0002] This patent application is based on US Patent Application Serial No. 10 / 386,249, filed March 11, 2003, entitled Imaging System Using Diffuse Infrared Light. technical field [0003] The present invention is generally directed to the generation of diffuse infrared light. More specifically, the present invention is directed to a system for illuminating an object with diffuse infrared light and producing a video image of the object based on the reflected infrared light. Background technique [0004] Certain medical procedures and treatments require a medical practitioner to locate a blood vessel within a patient's arm or other appendage. This task is difficult, especially when the blood vessels lie beneath a large accumulation of subcutaneous fat. The performance of imaging systems previously designed to aid in the discovery of such vessels has been insufficient. [0005] Therefore, there is a need for a system for enhancing the v...
