A method of operating a general purpose handheld communication device to monitor traffic events is disclosed. The handheld communication device is detachably mountable on a vehicle and includes a motion sensor, a video imaging sensor, a data processor, data storage medium, and data communication module. The method includes acquiring motion data using the motion sensor; identifying a traffic event based on the motion data; acquiring visual data using the video imaging sensor; saving data that includes the acquired visual data and motion data on the data storage medium; and communicating the saved data using the communication module.

A markerless method is described for tracking the motion of subjects in a three dimensional environment using a model based on linked kinematic chains. The invention is suitable for tracking robotic, animal or human subjects in real-time using a single computer with inexpensive video equipment, and does not require the use of markers or specialized clothing. A simple model of rigid linked segments is constructed of the subject and tracked using three dimensional volumetric data collected by a multiple camera video imaging system. A physics based method is then used to compute forces to align the model with subsequent volumetric data sets in real-time. The method is able to handle occlusion of segments and accommodates joint limits, velocity constraints, and collision constraints and provides for error recovery. The method further provides for elimination of singularities in Jacobian based calculations, which has been problematic in alternative methods.

A tubular suction tool for accessing an anatomic surface or anatomic space and particularly the pericardium to access pericardial space and the epicardial surface of the heart to implant cardiac leads in a minimally invasive manner are disclosed. The suction tool incorporates a suction pad concave wall defining a suction cavity, a plurality of suction ports arrayed about the concave wall, and a suction lumen, to form a bleb of tissue into the suction cavity when suction is applied. The suction cavity extends along one side of the suction pad, so that the suction pad and suction cavity can be applied tangentially against a tissue site. The suction tool can incorporate light emission and video imaging of tissue adjacent the suction pad. A working lumen terminating in a working lumen port into the suction cavity enables introduction of tools, cardiac leads, and other instruments, cells, drugs or materials into or through the tissue bleb drawn into the suction cavity.

A vehicular video mirror system comprises an interior electrochromic mirror having a transflective mirror reflector and a video screen disposed behind the mirror reflector so that the presence of the video screen is substantially unobservable to a driver of the vehicle until the video screen is actuated to emit light that passes through the electrochromic reflective element to be viewed by the driver of the vehicle. The invention is directed to a tracking system for tracking the use of an object on a work piece within a predetermined work space comprising a target, at least one video imaging source and a computer. The target is attached to the object and calibrated to derive an “Object Tracking Point”. Each target has a predetermined address space and a predetermined anchor. At least one video imaging source is arranged such that the work piece is within the field of view. Each video imaging source is adapted to record images within its field of view. The computer is for receiving the images from each video imaging source and comparing the images with the predetermined anchor and the predetermined address, calculating the location of the target and the tool attached thereto in the work space relative to the work piece.

An improved aircraft instrument flight display system employs primary and secondary video graphics processors for generating graphics video imaging information. Both the primary and secondary video graphics processors have associated potential failure threads and are preferably chosen to have different potential failure threads so that the same failure problem will not have a tendency to occur in both of the video graphics processors. The primary video graphics processor generates a graphical display of the aircraft flight information for use by the flight crew in operating the aircraft. The system also includes a video switch for switching between the primary and secondary video graphics processors under control of the integrity checking processor based on the integrity of the graphical display provided by the primary video graphics processor. The switch switches its output to the secondary video graphics processor when the integrity checking processor detects a mismatch condition for the primary video graphics processor in order to maintain critical display data availability when a mismatch has been detected with respect to the primary video graphics processor. The video imaging information provided by the secondary video graphics processor can be a subset of the video imaging information provided by the primary video graphics processor or it can be the same. The integrity checking function may be accomplished by storing a complex checksum, such as a CRC, for a predefined image of each graphics image capable of being rendered as a baseline, and calculating an image checksum for the rendered image and comparing it against the stored complex checksum corresponding to the image for determining any deviations from the baseline.

A system and method identifies a video file in response to a video based search query. A video imaging device in a mobile device captures a video file, and sends the video file to a search engine. A database associated with the search engine stores pre-indexed metadata of pre-indexed frames of video. A video analyzer separates the received video file into individual frames, analyzes the individual frames received from the mobile device by converting the individual frames into metadata, and compares the metadata to the pre-indexed metadata of the pre-indexed frames stored in the database. The video analyzer then sends a message containing information about the identified pre-existing video back to the mobile device based on the comparison of metadata. The metadata of the file and/or the metadata in the database may include one or more of pixel information, histogram information, image recognition information and audio information for each individual frame.

A low-cost system for detecting a drowsy condition of a driver of a vehicle includes a video imaging camera located in the vehicle and oriented to generate images of a driver of the vehicle. The system also includes a processor for processing the images acquired by the video imaging camera. The processor monitors an eye and determines whether the eye is in an open position or a closed state. The processor further determines a time proportion of eye closure as the proportion of a time interval that the eye is in the closed position, and determines a driver drowsiness condition when the time proportion of eye closure exceeds a threshold value.

A system and method are provided for monitoring an eye. The system includes a video imaging camera oriented to generate images of an eye. The camera is aligned along an imaging axis. A first light source is located at an angle less than 2.5 degrees of the imaging axis for illuminating the eye. A second light source is arranged at an angle greater than 4.5 degrees from the imaging axis for illuminating the eye. The system includes a processor for processing the images generated with the video imaging camera during illumination of the eye with the first light source and during illumination of the eye with the second light source.

A system and method are provided for monitoring an eye to determine eye closure. The system includes a video imaging camera oriented to generate images of an eye. The system also includes a video processor for processing the images generated with the video imaging camera. The processor includes an edge detector for detecting edges of the eye in the image and a line selector for generating substantially horizontal first and second lines representative of the detected edges. The processor determines the state of eye closure, such as eye open or eye closed, based on distance between the first and second lines. The system may be employed on a vehicle to determine the eye closure of a driver of the vehicle.
