Abstract

Systems and methods for secure and seamless roaming between internal and external networks are described. Double and triple tunnels can be used to connect mobile nodes to communicating hosts. A mobile node may have the capability to connect to two networks simultaneously to allow seamless roaming between the networks. For example, the system may comprise an internal home agent (602) in a virtual private network, an external home agent (605) and a security gateway (606) in a demilitarized zone between two firewalls (603, 604), and The tunnel may comprise an inner Mobile IP tunnel (610), optionally it is contained in an IPSec tunnel, and it is contained in an outer Mobile IP tunnel (608). In one embodiment, the mobile node (607) contains applications that access both external and internal MIP drivers connected to the first and second network drivers respectively. In another embodiment, the communication is diverted from the first network into the second network in response to establishing the second connection with the second network driver.

Description

[0001] Related application information [0002] This application claims US Application 60 / 488,809, filed July 22, 2003, entitled "Seamless and Secure WAN-LAN Roaming," and filed July 21, 2004, entitled "Secure and Seamless WAN-LAN Roaming" priority of these applications, the contents of which are expressly incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] Aspects of the invention relate to wireless communications. Aspects of the invention relate, inter alia, to maintaining connectivity while roaming between wireless networks. Background technique [0004] Different wireless technologies exist for mobile data users. Mobile data users can use cellular technology, IEEE 802.11-based technology, Bluetooth, and other wireless technologies to connect to the network. While handing off between access points in a single network is well known, handing off between access points running different wireless protocols is difficult. At this time, users expect seamless mobility d...
