Problems solved by technology

If the nonwoven fabric is formed to be contaminated to add antimicrobial agents, the process is slow and requires additional handling operations, which adds to the cost of manufacturing the filter media and is therefore not ideal
Although there are some antimicrobial agents that can be added to the fibers of nonwoven fabrics by melt extrusion during the fabric forming process, many existing antimicrobial agents are thermally degraded at the extrusion temperature of the fiber-forming polymer, so cannot be added this way
Another disadvantage of existing polyester filter media is that the filter cartridges are rather difficult to clean
Although polyester nonwovens are effective at removing dirt, cartridge cleaning is difficult and can cause damage or deterioration of the filter element

Embodiment 1

[0040] A roll of spunbonded polyester nonwoven filter media (Reemay manufactured by Reemay Inc. , grade 2033, sold by BBA Fiberweb, having the properties shown in Table 1 below) was placed on the unwind frame. The nonwoven filter media is formed from polyethylene terephthalate filaments having a generally trilobal cross-section, each filament having a linear density of 4.4 dtex (4 denier). The fabric is surface bonded with a polyethylene isophthalate copolymer adhesive. A roll of apertured high density polyethylene film (manufactured by DelStar Technologies, Inc., having the properties shown in Table 1) was loaded onto another unwind frame. As the nonwoven fabric roll is unrolled, the membrane is unrolled and directed onto one surface of the nonwoven fabric filter media. The two layers were guided through a nip formed by heated and smooth-surfaced calender rolls, thereby laminating the film layer to the nonwoven fabric layer, thereby producing permanent composite filter me...

Embodiment 2

[0044] A sample of the composite filter media of Example 1 was tested to meet the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) requirements for pool and spa bathing facility filters. Samples were tested for extractables according to (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards 21 C.F.R. §177.1630 (for polyester fabrics) and 21 C.F.R. §177.1520 (for polyolefin fabrics). As can be seen from the table below, these extractables are well below the limits set by these regulations.

Embodiment 3

[0047]The haze reduction and plugging time characteristics of the composite filter media of Example 1 were compared to a control sample formed from Reemay 2033 spunbond nonwoven only. Turbidity reduction is measured according to NSF / ANSIS Standard 50. Clogging time was evaluated by monitoring the pressure drop across the filter over time. The results of the comparison are shown graphically in FIGS. 6 and 7 . These figures show that the composite media of the invention (designated 1766-3ER) had comparable turbidity reduction to the control sample, and that the additional presence of the open-pored membrane layer did not alter the pressure drop across the filter during normal operation, nor There was no significant reduction in clogging time. After the plugging time test, both samples were rinsed to remove accumulated filter cake. The filter cake is easily removed from the composite filter media of the present invention by rinsing under running water. In the control sample, ...

Abstract

The invention provides a composite filter medium. The filter medium has a composite structure and includes a liquid-permeable nonwoven fabric substrate and a liquid-permeable polyolefin resin film layer bonded to one surface of the nonwoven fabric substrate and form an exposed surface of the filter media. An antimicrobial agent is added to the film layer. Preferably, the liquid-permeable film layer is a polyolefin film layer having a plurality of penetrating liquid-permeable openings. The antimicrobial agent is mixed with the polyolefin resin prior to extrusion of the film such that the antimicrobial agent is distributed throughout the film layer. The concentration of the antimicrobial agent present in the film layer may be 0.01% to 5% by weight of the film layer.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to filter media, and more particularly, the present invention relates to liquid filtration media suitable for use in filters for pools and spas. Background technique [0002] Pools and spas often have filtration systems through which water is circulated to remove dirt, debris and other foreign matter. Many filtration systems employ a generally cylindrical replaceable filter cartridge containing a pleated filter element. Filter elements are usually made of pleated polyester nonwoven material. One such nonwoven fabric material that has been widely used for many years is sold by BBA Fiberweb under the trademark Reemay A material that consists of a spunbond nonwoven fabric formed from polyester filaments that are bonded together to form a cohesive, pleatable nonwoven filter media. [0003] To inhibit the growth of microorganisms on the surface of filter elements in pools and spas, antimicrobial agents can be incorporated into non...
