Embodiment 1
[0040] A roll of spunbonded polyester nonwoven filter media (Reemay manufactured by Reemay Inc. , grade 2033, sold by BBA Fiberweb, having the properties shown in Table 1 below) was placed on the unwind frame. The nonwoven filter media is formed from polyethylene terephthalate filaments having a generally trilobal cross-section, each filament having a linear density of 4.4 dtex (4 denier). The fabric is surface bonded with a polyethylene isophthalate copolymer adhesive. A roll of apertured high density polyethylene film (manufactured by DelStar Technologies, Inc., having the properties shown in Table 1) was loaded onto another unwind frame. As the nonwoven fabric roll is unrolled, the membrane is unrolled and directed onto one surface of the nonwoven fabric filter media. The two layers were guided through a nip formed by heated and smooth-surfaced calender rolls, thereby laminating the film layer to the nonwoven fabric layer, thereby producing permanent composite filter me...
Embodiment 2
[0044] A sample of the composite filter media of Example 1 was tested to meet the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) requirements for pool and spa bathing facility filters. Samples were tested for extractables according to (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards 21 C.F.R. §177.1630 (for polyester fabrics) and 21 C.F.R. §177.1520 (for polyolefin fabrics). As can be seen from the table below, these extractables are well below the limits set by these regulations.

Embodiment 3
[0047]The haze reduction and plugging time characteristics of the composite filter media of Example 1 were compared to a control sample formed from Reemay 2033 spunbond nonwoven only. Turbidity reduction is measured according to NSF / ANSIS Standard 50. Clogging time was evaluated by monitoring the pressure drop across the filter over time. The results of the comparison are shown graphically in FIGS. 6 and 7 . These figures show that the composite media of the invention (designated 1766-3ER) had comparable turbidity reduction to the control sample, and that the additional presence of the open-pored membrane layer did not alter the pressure drop across the filter during normal operation, nor There was no significant reduction in clogging time. After the plugging time test, both samples were rinsed to remove accumulated filter cake. The filter cake is easily removed from the composite filter media of the present invention by rinsing under running water. In the control sample, ...
