Embodiment Construction

[0013] As shown, a gasket assembly 10 according to one embodiment of the present invention includes at least one gasket layer 12 and at least one accompanying shim layer 14 .

[0014] The gasket layer 12 may be any of the many types of gaskets known in the sealing art for clamping together first and second parts 16, 18 - such as a cylinder head or manifold in a cylinder block. A static seal is provided between the tubes. The gasket layer 12 may be formed with at least one fluid transfer opening 20 aligned with the fluid transfer channels 22, 24 of the first and second parts 16, 18, respectively. The gasket layer 12 effectively surrounds the fluid transfer passages 22 , 24 respectively to provide a fluid tight seal across the mating clamping faces 26 , 28 of the first and second parts 16 , 18 .

[0015] The gasket layer 12 may be fabricated from any of a number of materials suitable for the particular application, such as one or more layers of steel. The gasket may have one o...

Abstract

The gasket assembly includes a gasket layer and a separately formed shim layer. The shim layer and gasket layer are formed with at least one media-conveying opening that correspond to media-conveying passages communicating between first and second members to be clamped together and sealed by the gasket at the joint between members. The shim layer has an adhesive layer applied to its back surface 36 to enable the shim layer 14 to be adhered to original clamping face of the one of the first or second members in order to build up the surface or to cover up damage on the clamping face that could impair proper sealing with the gasket.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to static gaskets for creating a fluid-tight seal between two clamped parts, such as a manifold and a cylinder head. Background technique [0002] Gaskets are typically provided between the intake manifold and cylinder head of an internal combustion engine to provide a fluid tight seal against various media transfer openings, including coolant passages and intake ports. Some engines, especially newer ones that have been in use for some time, may develop severe corrosion around the coolant passages in the cylinder head and intake manifold, which is believed to occur in the presence of engine coolant This is caused by the build-up of an undesired electric galvanic cell between the manifold and the cylinder head. Over time, the manifold and / or cylinder head sealing surfaces can become eroded and spotted, thereby compromising the gasket's ability to maintain a fluid-tight seal and often causing engine coolant to leak at this joint. ...
