Embodiment Construction

[0016] The present invention will be discussed below by describing some example embodiments and by referring to the accompanying drawings. However, a person skilled in the art will recognize other applications and modifications within the scope of the invention as defined in the enclosed independent claims.

[0017] The present invention uses specific microphone assemblies for assisting sound source tracking systems in communication systems. It can be applied to individual and batch microphones. The main idea is to enhance the acoustic sound level in the critical high frequency range, thereby increasing the effective signal-to-noise ratio for sound pickup and localization algorithms.

[0018] This is achieved by enclosing the microphone in a channel or small cavity (Helmholtz resonator), which induces a fairly broad band of high frequency response peaks (resonance).

[0019] figure 1 This aspect of the invention is exemplified. As can be seen, the microphone elements are e...

Abstract

The present invention discloses an arrangement utilizes a certain microphone assembly for facilitating audio source tracking systems in communication systems. It can be applied to both single and array microphones. The principal idea is to enhance the sound level acoustically in the critical high frequency range, thereby increasing the effective signal-to-noise ratio both for sound pickup and localization algorithms. This is done by enclosing the microphone into a channel or a small cavity (a Helmholtz-resonator), thereby introducing a high-frequency response peak (resonance), fairly broad-band.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to sound source localization and in particular to a microphone arrangement specifically configured for capturing acoustic signals to be used in signal source localization. Background technique [0002] Signal location is used in a variety of applications. Perhaps the most well-known application is TV programming. In debate shows, for example, it is important for viewer experience and intelligibility to have the active camera point, preferably zoom, on the current speaker. However, this has traditionally been done manually by the producer. In other applications where cameras and microphones capture the images and sounds of many people, it may not be feasible or desirable to have a human being control the effects. [0003] An example of such an application is automatic camera positioning in video conferencing systems. A typical situation at the terminal of the video conferencing phone is a meeting room where many partici...
