Embodiment Construction

[0030] Referring now to the drawings, like numerals designate like elements throughout the several drawings, figure 1 A portion of a gas turbine engine 100 is shown. In general, the gas turbine engine 100 includes a compressor 110 . Compressor 110 compresses the incoming airflow. The airflow is then discharged to combustor 120 . The combustor 120 includes several combustion cans 130 . The compressed air and fuel are ignited in combustor can 130 and used to drive turbine section 140 . In the turbine section 140, the energy of the hot combustion gases is converted into mechanical work. Some of the work is used to drive the compressor 110 through the shaft 150, while the remainder can be used to drive a load, such as a generator.

[0031] As an example, gas turbine engine 100 may be a 7FA+e utility gas turbine engine available from the General Electric Company of Schenectady, New York. Other types of gas turbine engines 100 with combustors 120 may be used herein.

Abstract

The invention relates to a catalytically stable gas turbine combustor, in particular to such gas turbine combustor (230) that the gas turbine combustor (230) may include a central combustion nozzle (240) with a catalyst (250) therein and a number of outer combustion nozzles (180-220) surrounding the central combustion nozzle (240).

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates generally to gas turbine engines and, more particularly, to catalytically stabilized combustors for gas turbines. Background technique [0002] At temperatures above about 2800 degrees Fahrenheit (about 1538 degrees Celsius), nitrogen and oxygen present in the air combine to form nitrogen oxides (NO and NO 2 , collectively referred to as NO X ). As a result, modern low emission gas turbines typically use very lean, premixed flames to achieve low NO X of burning. Operable boundaries include "lean blowout" ("LBO"), which may result in partial or complete extinguishment of the flame in one or more combustors. Another boundary is sound pressure oscillations or combustion dynamics. These combustion dynamics may affect the operability or durability of the combustion system as a whole. As a result, individual gas turbines may need to be tuned individually to remain operational while still meeting emissions control require...
