Embodiment Construction

[0015] Embodiments may be directed to an application programming interface (API) layer that supports a file allocation scheme that can be used to store, retrieve, or Manage media content. The file distribution scheme can be used to store various types of media content received from various media sources into a single unified file structure comprising a single virtual file. In some cases, the virtual file may have a different logical file structure than the physical file structure used to actually store the media content, thereby exempting the virtual file from physical constraints and requirements. This file distribution scheme is particularly suitable for PVR and multimedia applications in view of the relatively large amount of media content associated with eg television shows and movies. However, this file distribution scheme is very flexible and scalable and thus need not be limited to PVR or multimedia applications. This file allocation scheme can be used as an on-disk s...

Abstract

An application program interface to manage media files may be described. An apparatus may comprise a media processing sub-system having a processor and a memory. The memory may store an application program interface software library having multiple software objects. The processor may execute the software objects in response to application program interface commands in order to manage a virtual file comprising a hierarchy of name-value pairs used to store media content from multiple media streams. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to media systems, and more particularly to file management techniques that may be directed to media systems. Background technique [0002] Media devices such as personal video recorders or digital video recorders may be used to store and reproduce digital media content. Examples of digital media content may include television shows, movies, home videos, songs, images, photos, and the like. Digital media content can be obtained from sources such as cable television providers, satellite television providers, digital versatile disk (DVD) players, compact disk (CD) players, digital video home systems, media content providers connected via the Internet, computer file And other media sources to receive. As a result, media devices may need to store an ever-increasing amount of media content from disparate media sources using a variety of files and file types. This can significantly increase file management operations...
