The invention discloses a method and a system for searching patent documentation by utilizing IPC classification. The method comprises the following steps of: using one or more than one search condition to search the patent documentation in a patent database to acquire a patent documentation search result data set; accounting the patent quantity of various IPC classifications in the acquired patent documentation search result data set; screening one or more than one IPC classification according to a statistic result; constructing a search formula by the screened IPC classification; and searching the formed search formula to acquire a search result. General engineering technical personnel do not know the IPC classification when searching patents, thereby failing to utilize IPC classification information to acquire accurate search results. The use of the method can acquire the related IPC classification according to given search conditions, and help a user to quickly determine the IPC classification and search, thereby effectively utilizing the IPC classification information and improving the accurate rate of the search results.
