Embodiment Construction

[0058] Devices that include some form of man-machine interface (MMI) are employed in a wide variety of environments. There are various types of MMIs (e.g. keyboards on devices such as computers, interactive panels / touch screens on various devices such as self-service air pumps, self-service check-in terminals at airports, etc.) that allow users to provide information, or to retrieve information from the device. Certain MMIs are becoming increasingly popular using touch screens where the user uses a finger or other implement (e.g., a stylus or other device by which the user selects a location on the touch screen) to interact with the touch screen. interaction. Any of a wide variety of devices may include an MMI implemented at least in part with a touch screen.

Abstract

This invention provides meshed touchscreen pattern. A conductive pattern implemented within a touchscreen (e.g., using indium tin oxide (ITO) such as may be deposited on a substrate composed of polyester or some other material) provides paths for signals traveling through the touchscreen. By monitoring these signal in accordance with some means (e.g., cross point detection, zone detection, etc.) an estimate may be made as to a location of user's interaction with the touchscreen (e.g., finger or stylus touching of the touchscreen). The conductive pattern includes a number of conductors aligned in various directions (e.g., row and column conductors) across the touchscreen, and they are separated by a dielectric layer (e.g., air, SiO2, or any other desirable dielectric layer). The conductors include a great deal of interlacing and meshing as achieved by spurs, extensions, and / or protrusions (e.g., of any desired shape) extending from one conductor into an adjacent conductor within the conductive pattern.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a device including a man-machine interface (MMI) implemented using a touch screen; and, more particularly, to a conductive pattern employed in such a touch screen. Background technique [0002] Touch screen technology is relatively new in the field of displays for stationary and mobile devices. Conventionally, an underlying wire that can sense a user's touch is arranged in a patterned manner and is iteratively monitored for a signal indicating the coordinates of a touch point. The original system was designed to detect a single touch; however, the new emphasis is on developing touchscreen technology that can accurately detect multiple simultaneous touches. [0003] Some existing techniques for multi-finger touch work by charging and discharging a voltage across a conductor row or column when touched and measuring the change in charge. This technique includes all stray capacitances in the measurement. One st...
