Problems solved by technology

[0008] The second critical issue is glare from reflections on the display surface
[0009] While some industrial coatings exist that provide some level of surface protection by improving oil / water wetting behavior to minimize fingerprint adhesion, none of these coatings have been successfully used on chemically toughened glass for touchscreen applications

Embodiment Construction

[0030] In the following description, like reference numerals designate like or corresponding parts in some of the views shown in the drawings. It should also be understood that the terms "top", "bottom", "outwardly", "inwardly" etc. are terms of convenience and should not be construed as terms of limitation unless otherwise indicated. In addition, when a group is described as comprising at least one group of elements and combinations thereof, it is to be understood that the group may include any number of the recited elements, either alone or in combination with each other. Similarly, when a group is described as consisting of at least one group of elements or combinations thereof, it is to be understood that the group may consist of any number of the recited elements, either alone or in combination with each other. Unless otherwise indicated, numerical ranges include the upper and lower limits of that range. The term "substrate glass" means an alkali metal boroaluminosilicat...

Abstract

An alkali aluminosilicate glass article, said alkali aluminosilicate glass having a surface compressive stress of at least about 200 MPa, a surface compressive layer having a depth of at least about 30 [mu]m, a thickness of at least about 0.3 mm and an amphiphobic fluorine-based surface layer chemically bonded to the surface of the glass. In one embodiment the glass has an anti reflective coating applied to one surface of the glass between the chemically strengthened surface of the glass and the amphiphobic coating. In another embodiment the surface of the chemically strengthened glass is acid treated using a selected acid (e.g., HCL, H2SO4, HClO4, acetic acid and other acids as described) prior to placement of the amphiphobic coating or the anti reflective coating.

Description

[0001] Related Application Cross Reference [0002] This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 026289, filed February 5, 2008, and claimed May 30, 2008 under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) Priority to filed U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 130532. technical field [0003] This invention relates to alkali metal aluminosilicate glasses. More particularly, the present invention relates to high strength, downdrawn alkali aluminosilicate glass articles for use as protective cover sheets. Even more particularly, the present invention relates to high strength, down-drawn alkali aluminosilicate amphiphobic glasses for use as cover plates in mobile electronic devices. Background technique [0004] Mobile electronic devices such as personal digital assistants, mobile or cellular phones, watches, laptops and notebooks, etc. often include covers. At least a portion of the cover is transparent to enable a user to see the display...
