Abstract

A wireless communication device for use in a noisy or harsh environment in connection with a cellular telephone is disclosed. The wireless communication device provides enhanced audio broadcasting capabilities for an operator of the device by providing a larger, more powerful speaker than that typically found in a cellular telephone. The apparatus of the present invention improves cellular telephone usage in the typically noisy and harsh environment found while operating a boat. The present apparatus further provides a half-duplex mode of communication to further reduce ambient noise expenenced while using a cellular telephone in a noisy environment In another embodiment, the apparatus is connectable to a variety of external devices and is capable of operating the external devices and providing internet access for a variety of external devices through a cellular telephone connection In at least one embodiment, the present invention is connectable to any transceiver.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 61 / 027,769, filed February 11, 2008. technical field [0003] The present invention generally relates to a maritime communication device with wireless connectivity, for example via Bluetooth technology or other wireless standards, with the cellular telephone subsequently connected to a cellular telephone network. Accordingly, an operator of a maritime communication device is able to place and receive cellular telephone calls while utilizing the more powerful microphone and speaker units associated with the maritime communication device or communication device used in other noisy environments. Background technique [0004] Traditionally, communication from ships is achieved via shipboard maritime VHF radios operating in the frequency range between 156 and 162 MHz. With the advent and widespread use of cellular telephones, smart phones, or other devices ...
