[0032] One symptom of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the loss of neurons in the brain. In many cases, medical professionals use MR (magnetic resonance) images to qualitatively measure neuronal loss by shrinkage (atrophy) of structures of interest, or sometimes more simply by enlargement of fluid-filled structures such as ventricles of the brain. Use volume for quantitative analysis. Volume or area in 2 dimensions is a rough measure that does not provide detailed shape analysis. On the other hand, medical professionals are reluctant to use shape descriptors that are complex, difficult to reproduce, or difficult to understand. This is why specialists use area and volume more preferentially in their diagnosis. In this paper, a novel and easily extractable shape descriptor for ventricles is disclosed. These shape descriptors were found to be better descriptors in, for example, the classification of Alzheimer's disease patients and healthy controls.

Abstract

A system for analyzing a brain ventricle (8) is described. The system comprises an edge detector (52) for identifying an edge point (17) on an edge of the brain ventricle. Also, a length measurer (53) is provided for establishing a length measure of a path (10) starting from a central point (5) of the brain ventricle and terminating at the edge point (17). The edge detector (52) is arranged for detecting an edge point at an end of a lobe of the brain ventricle, the length measure corresponding to an extent of the lobe.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the analysis of brain ventricles. Background technique [0002] Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia, accounting for 50-70% of all cases. Alzheimer's disease afflicts approximately 24 million people worldwide. With age the leading risk factor, statistical trends in an aging population will double this figure by 2025. Although there are currently no drugs to stop or prevent the disease, there are a variety of symptomatic medications that can relieve symptoms and, in some cases, slow the progression of the disease. Most of these drugs are only effective in the early or middle stages of the disease, which makes early detection of the disease desirable. Currently, the main tests for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease are cognitive ability tests. These tests are designed to measure various cognitive functions such as memory, attention, orientation, language skills, and learning ability. The main appe...
