[0032] One symptom of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the loss of neurons in the brain. In many cases, medical professionals use MR (magnetic resonance) images to qualitatively measure neuronal loss by shrinkage (atrophy) of structures of interest, or sometimes more simply by enlargement of fluid-filled structures such as ventricles of the brain. Use volume for quantitative analysis. Volume or area in 2 dimensions is a rough measure that does not provide detailed shape analysis. On the other hand, medical professionals are reluctant to use shape descriptors that are complex, difficult to reproduce, or difficult to understand. This is why specialists use area and volume more preferentially in their diagnosis. In this paper, a novel and easily extractable shape descriptor for ventricles is disclosed. These shape descriptors were found to be better descriptors in, for example, the classification of Alzheimer's disease patients and healthy controls.
