Problems solved by technology

However, known models of such sensors do have some disadvantages: it is difficult to form a loop with any accuracy and in a repeatable manner, so that the measurement characteristic varies with its diameter and the angle subtended by the transformer
This difficulty exists in both sensors: sensors whose ends are reinforced by a strip extending from one end to the other such that they have overlapping portions; and sensors whose ends engage inside the sleeve in facing relationship due to inaccurate fit and lead to a large gap between the cable ends, and this also makes the measurement inaccurate
Furthermore, the way the sensors are assembled is prone to change over time, which leads to new sources of measurement deviation and makes such sensors somewhat unsuitable for permanent installation in equipment

Embodiment Construction

[0020] figure 1 Shown is a power transmission device comprising an outdoor bushing 1 above which overhead power lines are located. Below the bushing 1, a shielded electrical cable 2 extends downwards; it has a circuit breaker 3 and other equipment in a known manner. The current sensor 4 according to the invention is shown at the base of the overhead liner 1 , but it could be used in other locations, and in particular around the circuit breaker 3 .

[0021] The current sensor consists of a cable 5 (see figure 2 and 3 ), the cable 5 can be formed as a loop, the end portions of which are butted against each other. The cable 5 has: an outer jacket layer 8, which may be made of flexible polyurethane with an outer diameter of 14 mm; and an inner jacket layer 9, which is concentric with the outer layer 8 and made of polyurethane or polyamide . The winding 10 , the conductor of which is a wire which may be insulated with a plastic sheath or varnish, is embedded between the two l...

Abstract

The sensor comprises a cable (5) looped around an element to be monitored, and includes a winding (10) on the Rogowski principle. It is original in that it is open at its ends (6, 7), that is to say the winding (10) is flush with the end faces (25) of the cable (5), and perfect continuity of the winding and of measurement over a circumference is established by abutting the two ends together. This cable may have a temperature sensor and a memory in which the measurement characteristics of the sensor are held. The sensor is reliable and accurate, and it can be left permanently in an electrical apparatus, or replaced, with no difficulty.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a current sensor in the form of a cable which is looped around a conductor element to be monitored by the sensor; the invention further relates to an electrical device designed to accommodate said cable or to which said cable can be applied. Background technique [0002] Current sensors are used in power distribution equipment to identify certain kinds of faults (in particular short circuits) by the current induced in the sensor due to the current flowing in the element being monitored. Current sensors are also found in circuit breakers in power distribution equipment that disconnect power lines to automatically interrupt the flow of electricity when a short circuit occurs. Automatic reclosing of the power lines is carried out shortly thereafter in order to re-establish current flow as quickly as possible. However, this operation is only of value if the fault due to the short circuit is temporary and has disappeared. If the f...
