[0010] According to the invention, a switching device (eg, a controller, a bridge or an access point) in a digital network inspects the data flow flowing through the switching device. When the switching device detects that a session has been initiated, the switching device starts monitoring the flow for initial UDP packets until a predetermined number of packets have been monitored. The switching device monitors and discriminates the header portion of the UDP packet, looks for the RTP header bit pattern, ignores some RTP packet types, and caches other RTP packet types. This forensic processing continues, attempting to match cached packet header information with subsequent packets in the flow to deterministically detect RTP flows.
