Abstract

A channel allocation mechanism for managing bandwidth using channel profiles to ensure available channels to support the highest desired bandwidth request by leaving contiguous segments available to support the request. The configuration, discussed further below, defines the profiles for the desired media types and associates each channel with a profile specifying the media types that can be allocated on that channel. Each media type includes service and bit rate, so different formats of the same service (such as SD and HD) are distinguished. Each profile specifies a media type, and each channel is associated with one or more profiles. Furthermore, the mapping of channels to associated profiles includes a reservation designation indicating that other (unreserved) channels will be fully assigned before reserved channels are assigned. Reserved channels provide contiguous blocks of bandwidth such that large bandwidth requests do not suffer assignment failures from multiple sparsely allocated channels.
