Fluid samples may include particulate matter of different sizes. A particle monitoring system controls the flow of a fluid sample through a conduit to age the particles. The properties of particulate matter change while residing in the pipeline. Contrary to the fluid flow of the fluid sample towards the outlet, gravity causes a portion of the particles in the fluid sample to fall to the bottom instead of being expelled outwards through the outlet. In the pipeline, the output port is located at a higher position in the vertical direction than the input port. The particle monitoring system outputs a portion of the primary particles (eg, particles that did not fall to the bottom due to gravity) in the fluid sample from the output port for analysis.
