However, because they are usually limited to static assessments of translational motion, these methods do not allow precise and reliable assessment of the knee joint
Such methods are generally not suitable for performing assessments while the knee is in motion

Embodiment Construction

[0046] An evaluation and diagnostic apparatus and method for evaluating a knee joint to detect knee joint pathology and / or injury will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. The device and method are adapted to quantify: (i) knee joint function (function), (ii) the impact of pathology and / or injury on knee joint biomechanics; (iii) the impact of a given treatment on knee joint biomechanical function influences.

[0047] In addition, the device and method described in the present invention do not require prior input for possible problems to be discovered, which is contrary to the currently existing evaluation devices and methods. These are generally limited to multi-classification (that is, to identify that the problem falls into one or more of these multiple categories) and they require prior input that the particular knee problem to be assessed may fall into category.

[0048] Referring now to the accompanying drawings, and more particularly to Figur...

Abstract

The present invention discloses an apparatus and method for identifying and characterizing knee joint problems. According to an embodiment, the method includes receiving biomechanical data from a sensor, and generating a biomechanical curve based on the biomechanical data, the biomechanical data being representative of the motion of the knee joint. The method also includes, at the processing device, classifying the biomechanical curve of the knee joint into the multiple categories of knee joint problems by applying pattern recognition techniques to a standard biomechanical curve associated with one of the multiple types of knee joint problems. a class of knee-like problems for each of the plurality of classes corresponding to at least one knee problem; based on the classification, identifying the problem as a class of the plurality of classes including at least one knee problem ; and archiving the identified problem in a storage device for access during consultation.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to application number US 12 / 772701 filed May 3, 2010. technical field [0003] The invention relates to the field of knee joint motion analysis methods and devices. More particularly, the present invention relates to devices and methods for assessing pathology and injury of the knee joint based on kinematic data. Background technique [0004] Studies have shown that musculoskeletal disorders are the second largest health-related expenditure after cardiovascular disease and ahead of cancer and neurological diseases in almost all industrialized countries. Musculoskeletal disorders mean diseases of cartilage, bone, muscle, ligaments and tendons. With the current gradual increase in life expectancy, musculoskeletal problems are becoming more prevalent in the population, increasing the number of pharmacological therapies and treatment devices available. As new treatments become available,...
