Abstract

The present invention relates to circuit breakers for protecting electrical power systems. A circuit breaker includes a semiconductor switching element having first and second electrical terminals and control terminals connected to a main power line. The switching element is controlled by an enable / disable control signal to switch between an open / closed state and a closed / open state for connecting or disconnecting at least one load to the power line. The circuit breaker includes a driver adapted to enable / disable the control signal. The circuit breaker includes a current limiting circuit operatively associated with the main power line and configured to send a first signal to the driver to disable the control signal to transition the switching element from the closed state to the open state upon detection of the fault current value a voltage regulating circuit, connected to the first and second electrical terminals, comprising: a dissipation device for storing residual electrical energy after switching the switching element from a closed state to an open state; and a device for limiting a fault voltage.
