Problems solved by technology

In particular, in osteoporotic bones, the fasteners tend to penetrate the bone and enter the joint space between the head of the humerus and the shoulder socket, causing extreme pain and possibly greater surgical trauma
This injury may impede, prolong, or prevent normal healing of humeral fractures and can lead to greater patient suffering and post-traumatic arthritis

Embodiment Construction

[0052] see figure 1 , which shows an embodiment of a proximal humerus fracture fixation system 510 according to the present invention. System 510 includes a humerus plate 512 having one or more post holes 536 in its head portion 534 and a plurality of screw holes 532 along its shaft portion 530 . Each post hole 536 is provided with a tubular post 514 . see figure 1 with figure 2 , post 514 includes a pair of arms 560 rotatably connected about axes 561 adjacent to distal end 562 of post 514 . Embodiments with three or more arms may also be provided. Each arm 560 includes a cam follower surface 564 substantially adjacent its axis of rotation 561 . Such as figure 1 As shown and described below, when cam follower surface 564 is subjected to forces in the distal and lateral directions, arm 560 moves into a radially open configuration. Column 514 includes a window 566 to allow the arm 560 to be in the closed position ( figure 2 ), the arm 560 may sit flush on the remainder...
