The normal sequence for this automated knife cutting process involves (1) dropping the knife into the material to be cut; (2) moving the knife in the direction required to cut the material into the desired two-dimensional shape; and (3) lifting the knife out of the material. to prepare for the next cutting sequence. Knives are kept sharp by the periodic application of a sharpening tool whose surface is composed of a material (measured in Mohs hardness) harder than the composition of the surface of the blade being sharpened.
