Problems solved by technology

[0004] Some users have found that known liners with seals do not adequately withstand volume fluctuations and can leave indentations on the residual limb over time with continued use
For some users, further improvements may be required, since known liners do not adequately adapt to the user's anatomy and thus do not provide the necessary comfort and skin protection

Embodiment Construction

[0032] The various embodiments of the present invention may be better understood by reading the following description when read in conjunction with the corresponding drawings, in which like reference numerals refer to similar elements.

[0033] A. Overview of Suspension Liner Implementations

[0034] In each of the embodiments discussed herein, the suspension liner is intended to be used between the residual limb and the prosthesis (eg, a rigid socket), and is airtight when fitted over the residual limb. The inner surface of the liner may be formed from a layer of silicone rubber elastomer, thus serving as a skin interface. The advantage of silicone rubber is that it allows incorporation into the liner of the invention in different states and degrees of softness and strength. In addition, silicone rubber allows for the addition of supplements of choice, such as petroleum jelly and aloe vera for improved skin care and comfort.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a suspension liner (10) for use as an interface between a residual limb and a prosthetic socket. The liner (10) has an elongated, generally tapered liner body (12) formed from at least one sheet of material elastically expandable at least radially from a relaxed, non-expanded state, and comprising a proximal end region and a distal end region, and a sealing member (14) associated with the liner body, the sealing member having an outer surface (54) defining at least one outer seal (18) projecting from the outer surface And extend from the seal member relative to the longitudinal axis of the liner body (12) to form rings (26, 28). At least one internal formation (32) is defined along an inner surface (56) of the sealing member (14) and defines at least one flap (34) extending obliquely toward the liner body (12). The portion of the sealing member (14) carrying the inner formation (32) is freely extending and movable relative to the liner body (12).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a suspension liner for a prosthetic device, and more particularly to a suspension liner for wrapping a residual limb and having a sealing feature for engaging a prosthetic socket. Background technique [0002] Suspension liner systems are widely used in prosthetic systems for residual limbs to stabilize soft tissue, minimize play or stretch, aid circulation of the residual limb, and increase comfort. [0003] Various solutions have been found in the prior art, including those described in US Patent 7,025,793, issued April 11, 2006, and US Patent 8,034,120, issued October 11, 2011. According to these publications, the liner comprises a liner body and a sealing member at a distal end region of the liner body. The sealing member is flexible such that it can conform to the shape of the residual limb and the inner walls of the prosthetic socket, thus providing an airtight seal. The seal minimizes movement of the limb withi...
