Embodiment Construction

[0022] Numerous specific details are set forth in the following description. It is understood, however, that embodiments of the invention may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known circuits, structures and techniques have not been shown in detail in order not to obscure the understanding of this description.

[0023] References in the specification to "one embodiment," "an embodiment," "example embodiment," etc. mean that the described embodiments may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic but that not every embodiment may include the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. structure or property. Moreover, such terms are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. In addition, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in conjunction with one embodiment, whether or not explicitly described, it is considered within the scope of those skilled in the art to implement such feature,...

Abstract

A router receives a leave message from a host on a subscriber circuit. The leave message indicates a request to stop receiving a multicast stream that is associated with a group object. The interface between the router and network elements includes, but not limited to, a remote multicast replication interface. A group specific query is then sent on the subscriber circuit, and is directed to hosts on the subscriber circuit and regards only the multicast group of the received request. Next the group object association with the subscriber circuit is removed from the record at the router if, in response to the group specific query, no host of the subscriber circuit reports receiving the traffic stream corresponding to the multicast group identified in the leave message.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the invention relate to multicast replication in a remote multicast replication system. In particular, embodiments of the invention relate to the use of call admission and management of group objects in remote multicast systems. Background technique [0002] Multicast is used to bring broadcast style video and audio streaming all simultaneously to amplified listeners. As compared to unicast, where each host receives its own stream, in multicast, each host typically receives the same content at approximately the same time over an Internet connection. Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) and Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) have been established to provide a standard format and protocol for multicasting. These protocols are now used to bring broadcast television style entertainment to the home using the Internet Protocol. [0003] In multicast, independent streams are sent on each subscriber circuit. When there are millions of v...
