Problems solved by technology

If the capacity of the battery is reduced, the state of charge (SOC) of the battery is also reduced, and the driving range of the vehicle is reduced
Also, it takes longer to charge the battery due to the limited charge rate
These temperature limits on the battery may cause the vehicle to fail to meet user expectations

Abstract

A method and system are disclosed for controlling an electric vehicle while charging, the vehicle including a traction battery with a thermal circuit and a controller. The controller is configured to: (i) charge the traction battery with a maximum charging current defined by a minimum cell temperature while the traction battery is connected to the charger; (ii) if the minimum cell temperature is below a predetermined temperature , the traction battery is heated while charging the traction battery. A method for controlling an electric vehicle while the electric vehicle is connected to a charger includes, in response to a low cell temperature of a traction battery, charging the battery with a first portion of electrical power from the charger while simultaneously utilizing a second portion of the electrical power from the charger. Electric power to heat the battery.

Description

technical field [0001] Various embodiments relate to a method and system for controlling an electric vehicle while the electric vehicle is connected to an external power source. Background technique [0002] Vehicles such as battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles include a traction battery (eg, a high voltage battery) as the vehicle's energy source. The chemistry and performance of the battery will change depending on the temperature of the battery. For example, when the temperature of the battery decreases or drops below a given temperature, the battery may have a limited or restricted charge rate and / or reduced capacity. This temperature can depend on the chemistry or technology of the battery and is likely to be encountered by many batteries in an automotive environment (for example, in the cold winter ambient temperatures of North America or Europe). If the capacity of the battery is reduced, the state of charge (SOC) of the battery is also reduc...
